Here’s What You Need to Check the Next Time You Buy Bottled Water. Is your bottled water safe for drinking ? find out in this video. When buying bottled water, we usually don’t put too much attention on the bottle. we can protect our health by checking the bottom of the bottle before we choose a bottled water.

First, the content of every bottle must be labeled by every brand. So, remember that the plastic bottles which are labeled with PP, HDPE, HDP, and several others, are safe as they do not release toxic substances in the water. The remaining letters can signify the chemicals included in the bottled water. In this video, we explain how to distinguish toxic from a healthy bottled water.

1. pete or pet (Polyethylene Terephthalate).
Bottles labeled PETE or PET can release chemicals and heavy metals that can disrupt the hormonal balance. As a precaution, these bottles should not be reused or heated and can be recycled once into new secondary products such as fabric, carpet or plastic lumber. Some studies have found levels of antimony (a toxic chemical) discharge from water bottles that have been placed in the heat for prolonged times.

2. HDPE or HDP (High-Density Polyethylene).
If you see these letters on a bottle, it means that the water is safe to drink. In fact, this water is regarded to be the healthiest water because these types of bottles don’t release any type of chemicals or harmful substances. This type of plastic is very hard-wearing and does not break down under exposure to sunlight or extremes of heating or freezing.

3. PVC or 3v (Polyvinyl Chloride).
Bottles labeled with these letters mean they release two toxic substances that can disrupt the hormone balance in your body. a popular thermo plastic that contains high levels of chlorine which can reach up to 57%. This type of plastic has a risk of releasing toxic breakdown products like phthalates into food and drinks and the manufacturing of PVC is known to release highly toxic dioxins into the environment.

4. LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene).
Although this kind of plastic doesn’t release dangerous chemicals, still it shouldn’t be used in the plastic bottle production. It is a thermo plastic made from petroleum which can be found translucent or opaque. It is flexible and tough but breakable and considered less toxic than other plastics, and relatively safe for use. LDPE is one of the safer plastics.

5. PP (Polypropylene).
This is another semi-transparent or white colored plastic used in the production of yogurt cups and syrup packings. PP is considered as one of the safer plastics. This type of plastic is microwavable safe and dishwasher safe.

6. PS (Polystyrene).
These letters are usually found on fast food casings and coffee cups. They indicate that the plastic releases carcinogen substances. Polystyrene (PS) is a petroleum-based plastic and it can either be hard or used as Styrofoam because polystyrene is the weak base from its structure with ultra-lightweight, it breaks up easily and is dispersed readily throughout the natural environment. An untold number of marine species have ingested this plastic with immeasurable consequences to their health. Polystyrene is known to leach which can significantly damage your nervous system and linked to cancer into your food.

7. Other (BPA, Polycarbonate and LEXAN).

This plastic is believed to be the most dangerous one used in food products, as it releases BPA chemicals. It is usually included in the content of food containers and sports water bottles. Its properties are easily molded, temperature resistance, stiffness, strength, optical clarity, and estimation that over 300 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide. the evidence is also very strong showing that these chemicals are influencing adults and children too, thus leading to decreased sperm quality, early puberty, stimulation of mammary gland development, disrupted reproductive cycles and ovarian dysfunction, cancer and heart disease, among numerous other health problems.

it is imperative to avoid exposing your plastics to high temperatures (microwave, dishwasher) and mild detergents for cleaning. There is no guarantee that plastics will not leach out harmful chemicals.
Therefore, make sure you look at the bottom of every bottle of water before you decide to buy it!
