Just another day here for us! This is a quick look at our daycare room, where not only our daycare dogs are practicing duration and treadmilling, but also the board and train and board and play dogs.
Every dog on the property practices these skills everyday. We also like to work the dogs in different rooms and part of the training center. Once they understand their skills in the training room, we begin to work in other places. Place means place no matter where you are and the same rules apply regardless of location.
Dogs are calm and practicing a more balanced state of mind. We use them as distractions for one another. Our daycare room is a very busy room and we constantly have staff and dogs walking through so the level of distraction is very high. Dogs work up to practicing their skills here. We must first make sure they have a clear understanding of what is expected and their foundation skills are where we want them to be. From here, we can give them information and help them make better choices everyday.Jeff Gellman

Hero just arrived for a board and train program to work through a few issues.
He is extremely anxious and struggles to be in his crate. He is also very nervous around children and has bitten a child before, as well as, another dog. He bite his owners 7 year old niece who was near him doing gymnastics.
Hero seems to have a high prey drive around children and will be on high alert and shake when they are near.
His anxiety is pretty high and he really struggles being alone. His owner cannot leave him for a long period of time or she will come back to him drooling and with a soaking wet crate.
Hero has also become increasingly more aggressive and daycare and getting into more fights.
His owner has had a really hard time working through the anxiety. As you can see from this video, he is on edge and his mind does not stop.
Hero's owner is ready for a change and we will be helping Hero to become less anxious and relax more.

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #67

Working wtih fearful dogs.

Lots of fearful dog training advice floating around and so much of it is just plain wrong and most of the time will leave you and the dog stuck or going back wards.

We work with lots and lots of fearful dogs, thousands of them so far, I meet hundreds a year at my seminar and over and over again, and the magic is always do more and not less. That means more pressure on the dog, more accountability on the dogs, more structure wit the dog and absolutely punishment for dangerous and unwanted behaviors. That's the one that folks struggle with, that PUNISHMENT word, "why would you use punishment with a dog that is already fearful" well my really simple answer is that "IT WORKS" and it works in a big way just about every single time.

Dogs are already in a state of fear, they will stay suspended in a state of fear if you do not change things up with them. Most of the dogs will not take food, most do not have food drive or toy drive. Many will shy away from you or even bite you if you try to use any form of physical touch ie: petting/holding. Most will just freeze on you, so what happens owners get frustrated at lack of progress that the dog is making.

So move forward with your dog that is nervous and fearful, you don't need to coddle the dog, you don't need to treat the dog like it is made of glass, put pressure on your dog, learning the art of working with fearful dogs is something we have created over working with many fearful dogs.

Tex came in as a very nervous dog with a lot of natural drive. He has learned what structure is and is much more balanced and calm. Because we have gotten him into a calmer state of mind and are able to control him now, we can begin to incorporate high energy activities and exercises with him. We still need to have an off switch with him and this is exactly what Jon shows in this video.
He is now able to play with Tex, but can immediately slow his mind and get his focus back to work. Tex is a working dog and likes having a job so combining play and work can be a really great thing for a high drive dog like him.
Before we even introduced this, we made sure to work him through his obedience commands and proof him on stranger reactivity and aggression. We built a bond with him and helped him gain a ton of confidence, as well.

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #91

Don't get hung up on the thought process of How things SHOULD be, and instead be AWARE of how things actually are. We need to be more analytical with our decision making, instead of emotional with our decision making with our dogs.

That does not mean not to have goals or to be working to a better place with you and your dog.

Lots of folks are working on things emotionally instead of intellectually, i get it, they are dogs and we care deeply about them.

Doing rehab and behavior modification is pretty methodocol work though and it takes a pretty neutral mind and heart (not cold heart lol) to get the results needed.

Working through Wilson’s unhealthy obsession. Focused fetch. Take 2. if you do not know the history of this dog he bites his owner every day, hunts him down and bites, and also HIGHLY resource guards the ball. He also will not drop it and if you but your hand towards him while he has the ball he will bite you, so him offering the ball up to us is huge, him not guarding the ball is huge. Also keep in mind that we are not swapping food for the ball as in offering something better as is preached so much, the dog is being rewarded for dropping the ball, there is a very big difference. pretty soon we stop the food for that, we train with the dogs daily food as they work for their food each day.
