creek life waste services My World Science Festival Display & Dr Karl speaking about water health, Brisbane 2018

I was invited to set up a display at the World Science Festival and make a speech. It was great to show the year 7 students the creek life so accessible to us in SEQ. They were fascinated by the Water Tiger and many students tested their knowledge with the Species Labeling Display.
To care for waterways, you need to know which species are native and endemic. You need to learn the sensitivity rating of the Bio indicators and you need to know the threats facing our waterways. Sometimes it is simple changes like picking up rubbish about to wash into creeks from our gutters or how to dispose of unwanted poisons and paint. We need to rethink the amount of plastic we use too. Stop using one use plastic bottles for a start. After listening to Dr Karl, I think wearing natural fabrics will need to be another priority. Some of the mistakes we are making now aren't going to have an impact for decades but that doesn't mean we don't need to act now. Micro-plastics are showing up in our food chain, our water and in our salt already!
