Voting has ended for 2017 Healthy Land and Water Awards. Winner announced 1st September 2017

This is the 'Will Matthews Legacy Pond' from my time as Sustainability Captain at Milton State School 2016. I wanted to install a Native Species Pond at my State School to teach the children about the importance of caring for our Waterways. I still maintain the pond even though I'm now at High School. The pond is very sustainable with fish breeding well and good water quality due to the balance achieved with plants and fish. There's so much to learn from studying waterways and they are also very calming. Maintenance includes water top up which is done with rainwater collection whenever possible. I initially had trouble with Ibis fishing in the pond. For a while, bird netting had to be added as the wire safety mesh was making a fish capture too easy for the ibis. Now the plants have grown, the bird netting has been removed and lots of bird species and insects will be able to drink from the pond. I'm so proud of this pond! I wonder if I'll be able to add a pond to my High School one day. Such a great learning tool as well as beautiful.
